Science, Stories & Asking Too Many Questions
Before becoming a full-time writer, I spent years in science and academia. I hold a Ph.D. in molecular oncology and a master’s degree in medicine, and I was a tenured professor and Chair of a science department.
Science taught me to be relentlessly curious, to question assumptions, and to obsess over how things actually work. Those habits followed me into fiction.
It’s probably why, when I decided to write a werewolf romantasy, I couldn’t simply accept that werewolves were magic. I had to figure out how they healed, why they ran hot, how their senses worked, and whether their biology could make any sense at all.
Apparently, a Ph.D. in molecular oncology was eventually going to lead to werewolf biology.
My career has also taken me through scientific research, teaching, medical/scientific editing, and publishing. Across all of it, I’ve been interested in the same thing: how people, and the worlds they inhabit, work.
